Web Designer/Developer

Over the past decade, the Bank’s external Web site—www.worldbank.org—has dramatically changed the Bank’s ability to reach out to the development community and it currently is undergoing a meaningful revamp. The site provides nearly two million visitors a month with timely information and serves as a symbol of the institution’s transparency and willingness to work with people around the world. It is the Bank’s most important tool for sharing knowledge, communicating our activities, and demonstrating our effectiveness to the world.

The Bank’s Web Program, housed in External Affairs, is looking for a passionate, creative and experienced individual with excellent sense of design and technical skills. He/she should have the ability to work under pressure, tight deadlines and changing priorities with a diverse set of communications colleagues, who are committed to international development.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and building web pages, adapting existing design templates, translating prototypes and PSDs into launch-ready, valid HTML/CSS, producing graphics and other visual elements for the Bank’s website. In addition, the position may entail producing flash components, video and other multimedia content. An ability to demonstrate a sound understanding of information architecture is highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

The Web Designer/Developer will work under the direction of the Design & Creative Lead and must be a team player working collaboratively with other groups (Multilingual, Editorial, IA, etc.). He/she will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Conceptualize and develop original design ideas following already established style, and branding guidelines.
• Work with Editorial, IA, and Design teams to brainstorm and develop designs based on wireframes and existing design templates.
• Create page layouts from scratch as well as update content and tweak design of existing web pages.
• Create web graphics, banners, icons, info-graphics, and multimedia content, such as photo galleries, slideshows and videos.
• Translate prototypes and PSDs into launch-ready, standards-compliant valid XHTML/CSS.

Selection Criteria:

• Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of web design and development experience.
• Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative suite (Photoshop, DreamWeaver, Illustrator, Flash and Acrobat) and familiar with video/audio for the Web.
• Strong working knowledge of HTML/XHTML and CSS. Must be able to build web pages by hand.
• Understanding of information and site architecture.
• Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
• Ability to work capably under stress and to juggle multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
• Drive and self-starting attitude and strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; sensitive to working in a multicultural environment.
• Written knowledge of French, Arabic or Spanish useful but not necessary.
